After making that link post on maddox (which is one of my FAVORITE sites in the Internet, by the way), I decided that I would make a list of sites that I think you should check out if you want to know more about the American culture.
The sites below provide information on the side of American culture the media doesn’t usually cover.
Tons of short, free articles on American culture for men. From women, dating, work, lifestyle, money, sports, and a bunch of other things. There’s a lot of articles that are over the top, but there’s so much stuff here that some of it is bound to be good. I occasionally read this site when I’m bored.
Vice Magazine
I rarely, if ever read this site. I’ve been told, though, that this is the place to go if you want to catch up on trends and what not on American culture. This website is about Vice, a free hipsterish magazine that has messed up articles on all kinds of topics (drugs, lifestyle, and weird subcultures being not uncommon). Every issue has a different theme.
The Onion
Again, a site I rarely check out. Not because it’s bad or anything, but because the connection from Indonesia is horrible! It’s slower than a snail. I can open up a page and leave to make an ice tea, come back, and still have the page loading. Slow as heck. But this is very popular in America. It’s a satirical paper, meaning it makes fun of real world news. The writers are really funny, and they can think of weird twists on just about everything. This site is highly recommended.
Pointlesswaste of Time
Another satirical site. I really like this site. The writers are two crazy guys who think off the most wild ideas and write them up as articles. Definitely worth a check.
College Humor
I read this every once and a while. This site is about college life in America. There are topics on drinking (which surprise, surprise, is usual in America), classes, wacky lecturers and just life in the USA. I like it because it gives you a perspective on what life in America is like.
This is another version of College Humor. The writers are all college students (or recently graduated), and focus on writing about their views on college life. I frequently read Primal Urges by Nathan DeGraff. His snippets is always worth a laugh.
Urban Dictionary
The Urban Dictionary is where you should go when you read a slang word that you can’t find in any other dictionaries. You know, like beeyat***s, nig**r, and chink.
Wikipedia
No need to say more, do I? It’s the place to go for . . . just about everything. Whenever I get an assignment from my lecturer, I just open up this sweet website here and get the information I want in a second. I can’t imagine what life was without wikipedia. You can get just about everything on American culture here. If you ever hear of something, like a new TV show, band, or trend, and you want to get up to speed on it, you’ll find something on it here.
